Name: Captain Celestia
Canon: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic / Post-Mostly Harmless
OU/AU/OC: AU
Canon Point: Season 3, ep. 2 / 300 years after the events of Mostly Harmless RPG
History: Canon history
Celestia's experience with the Thor was both extremely trying and liberating at the same time. The local authorities claimed that Equestria had been destroyed due to the 'Four Ponies of the Apocalypse', but there was no evidence to either support or refute that claim. As such, she chose not to believe it, instead deciding that she would find it once more. In between the various events that happened on the colony ship, Celestia started to do research, learning things that may be useful like astrological navigation, Many Worlds Theory, starship operation, and a myriad of other topics, as she had nothing but time. For the most part, however, she figured that the most direct way was to simply travel with the ship, as it was likely that it would one day appear in orbit around where she wanted to go.
Despite giving herself an activity to fill time, the sudden shift in lifestyle, going from a ruler with the weight of an entire kingdom on her shoulders to being responsible only for herself was a difficult thing to get used to. For a while, she regressed to childish behaviors, over-utilizing her newfound freedom to simply have a good time, which often involved pranks on the ponies that existed on the ship with her or other friends she made. While she did eventually relent on these activities, she never stopped completely, taking a more subtle approach to her shenanigans. These often took the form of liberal interpretations of her various jobs, doing them less to the set standards and more to her own rules.
This would continue for a year or two before the Thor received a command to cease its space exploration and instead form a colony on a garden world. Celestia attempted to make the best of the situation, using her experience to take a leadership role and form the colony of New Equestria, but it was not a satisfactory solution. She wanted to find the real Equestria, the one she was torn away from, a goal that could not be accomplished by simply sitting at the head of a colony like the kingdom in name only.
Her efforts were not without resistance. The phenomenon of worlds being destroyed is not unique to Equestria, and not unknown to the general universal population. There exists a universally-widespread political-religious group termed the "Purists". It is their belief that worlds are destroyed for a reason, and that it is destiny. Anything that somehow survives the destruction, such as the refugees on the Thor and many other ships in the fleet, are not supposed to be there, and thus are impure and deserve to be eliminated. While the ship was still in operation, the members of the group operated in subtle ways, manipulating laws to try and oppress refugees. This only got worse once the colony was formed, and because of it, Celestia's quest to put together a ship to start searching for Equestria herself was being resisted at almost every turn, be it from gathering materials to commissioning a shipyard on another planet to everything bureaucratic.
Celestia isn't one to give up, however. Perseverance and assistance from other refugees eventually led to the ship's creation, christened the Aurora Solis. She and a crew of other refugees wanting to find their home boarded and set sail. However, the Purists didn't let them get off without a parting shot. Legislative manipulation in nearby systems allowed them to frame Celestia for a number of fabricated crimes, and they managed to get the Solis' registration paperwork lost in the system. This put a significant bounty on her head, ensuring that she would not be safe wherever he travels in the universe.
While she initially tried to restore her name, she eventually decided that trying to deal with someone else's rules was more often than not a waste of time. Laws could be manipulated, and in many places, they were completely corrupt, be it by Purist hands or simply local or corporate problems. Space is a big place, and everyone had their own agenda to try and bend the rules with. Celestia decided that the best way to win this political game was not to play at all. It was a gradual change, starting with a few backroom deals and subversions of the law, but over the course of several years, it escalated to outright theft and use of force to get what she needed, be it fuel, arms, parts, or simply assistance to others being oppressed. The Aurora Solis was refitted from being a simple transport frigate to a full-on armed pirate ship, scouring space in search of worlds that are thought to be destroyed.
Personality: Despite now being on the other side of the law, Celestia is still Celestia. She is a practiced leader of others and can easily get others to follow under her. Her style is very empathetic, as she is able to read personalities and emotions on others' faces and speak accordingly to gain their favor. She is also able to keep her cool in stressful situations, thinking through the situation logically and is able to be quickly decisive when the need arises. She keeps up a gentle, but authoritative aura that others, ponies and aliens alike, can look to for stability.
In practice, her methods are often far from direct, preferring to quietly set things up in the background and let them all fall into place on their own. As a canon example, Celstia did not give much direct instruction to Twilight Sparkle, telling her at first only to "make friends in Ponyville" and write back with reports. She did not mention anything about Nightmare Moon, going so far as to dismiss Twilight's concerns about it, yet it seems apparent that she intended for Twilight to be able to take care of it from the start. The same extends to her grooming Twilight to be a princess. She never stated it, but simply allowed twilight to walk down that path of her own will, letting her discover all the lessons she learned for herself, instead of simply teaching it. As a captain, she is a little more direct with her crew when it comes to missions, but many are performed with meticulous planning and setting up beforehand, and then firm and decisive action during execution.
Despite her position as a leader, Celestia is not one to take things too seriously. she is quite willing to laugh with her subjects and drink with her crew, and tease and troll close friends for little more than her entertainment. She keeps this behavior benign, however, never willing to resort to anything that may harm them or their feelings, and will quickly apologize if it goes too far. She knows how to have fun with her job, even if it involves little things to take away from tedium by, say, using her position as a radio DJ to play songs about and to the chagrin of her sister, or inviting everyone to write the same sort of friendship reports that Twilight does, or spiking the drink of a resident non-drinker to see how they act on a Saturday night.
She has changed only slightly in regards to her morals. While she may have paid heed to laws of other countries as a Princess, she no longer does as a pirate. She has her own code of conduct when it comes to piracy, and while she holds herself and her crew to them, she does not pay heed to the rules of others.
Celestia's version of piracy revolves around three main axioms:
1. Do no harm unless it is the only option. While Celestia's crew regularly raids merchant and cargo ships, casualties and fatalities are few and far between. Celestia knows that most, when faced with the threat of violence, will readily give up their goods rather than try and fight them off. As such, her boarding parties are mostly displays of force. While they are heavily armed, shots are rarely fired at living individuals. However, there are exceptions, and Celestia knows that violence can in fact solve problems, though this route is only taken if her crew is in danger or if it will likely prevent more violence in the future. Murder is handled in much the same way, with Celestia preferring to knock out or incapacitate enemies instead of outright killing them.
2. Take only that which will not be missed. Celestia only targets cargo if its loss will not cause significant damage. Thus, the vessels and planetary buildings most frequently targeted for raids are shipments from megacorporations that can afford the loss, or goods obtained through illicit means. The exceptions to this rule are Purist vessels, which they leave only enough for the victim to take refuge on the nearest station or planet. These are surprisingly frequent.
3. Let the sun shine to those in the dark. A fancy way of saying to share the wealth. While she is largely successful in what she does, much of her loot does not go to her or her crew, but rather those on poorer planets or those oppressed by one group or another that could use help. In this sense, she is less like a traditional pirate and more like a spacefaring, pony Robin Hood.
She does not budge from these axioms, and conflicts sometimes arise because of this, be it from her crew or from external circumstances. It has cost them many raids in the past, as well as a crew member or two by either death or resigning, but Celestia feels that these morals are paramount to keep from becoming that which they fight against as they journey the stars, looking for home. She would rather accept these losses than compromise these morals.
Strengths: As an Alicorn, Celestia has access to a very wide range of various magics. Levitation, teleportation, transmutation, and even lasers are all within her ability, and she can learn any sort of magic that any other unicorn can, rivaled only by her sister, Luna, and her student, Twilight Sparkle. Additionally, she has physical strength to rival that of many earth ponies, and the same ability to fly as a pegasus, though her size limits her agility in the air compared to her smaller counterparts.
Most importantly, she has the ability to raise and lower the sun and moon on Equestria, and was responsible for bringing the day each and every morning. (However, he time spent outside Equestria and studying astronomy has diminished this ability, as she has no use for it in space. While she can easily learn to do it again, the power cap imposed on her in MLJ, as well as respect for her SN self, will keep her from being able to manipulate any celestial bodies during her stay in the game.)
Due to the fact that magic is not in widespread use in space, Celestia did not pick up any significant new abilities or spells during her time as a pirate, instead, she has learned to use her existing abilities in new ways, such as a modified form of unicorn levitation to magically manipulate digital devices, and fighting styles revolving around the use of levitated weapons.
Weaknesses: No obvious weaknesses worth noting apart from personally-imposed restrictions and weaknesses. She can be stubborn at times, quick to decide on a course of action and will stay with it. Additionally, she can be very withholding of information that she deems potentially dangerous or not worth others knowing, believing she can deal with it herself. We have seen from SN Celestia what problems can arise from this.
Possessions:
- The Pulsar Sunspot, a cutlass/dagger combo obtained early on in deep-space travel, and is Celestia's weapon of choice for being showy. The cutlass (Pulsar) has a small enchantment that allows the its hilt to form into a mouthgrip or a hoofgrip for non-magical use. This only applies to the cutlass. The dagger (Sunspot) does not have any enchantment.
- Her pirate hat. It's a hat. A fancy, durable hat with a hole for her horn. Yes, she plumed it with one of her own feathers because that's how she rolls.
Pony/Animal Type: Alicorn
Cutie Mark: A yellow sun with eight emanating rays.
Pony Picture: A Magnificent Pirate
SAMPLES
First Person: From the 4th Wall event.
Third Person: It felt strange, being back in Equestria. It looked like her home, and in fact it was her home in some sense of the word, but something about it simply didn't feel right. Something apart from the obvious influence of this Pale Pony. Familiar and alien at the same time. She had told herself that it was simply because it was a different universe, but a nagging suspicion said otherwise. Was it her, instead? Was she the one that was different? She did lead a very different life for quite a while, but had it really changed her that much? It couldn't have.
But yet, here she was, hiding behind a building on the outskirts of town in the aftermath of the mirror incident, her crew having been taken away without her. She was... scared of being seen. Yes, she did put herself in the spotlight quite a bit in the week previous, but that was a time of chaos, where her antics would go relatively unnoticed in comparison to things like the appearance of humans and all manner of aliens. Now, things had died down. Everypony was back to normal, and Ponyville was getting on with daily life, as it always does after chaotic events. She stood out all the more, no longer the Princess she used to be. The hat and clothes she wore were a testament to that fact. She wasn't this world's Princess Celestia, and it didn't look like she would be any world's Princess Celestia. Even if she took it off, there were things she couldn't hide, differences anypony could spot. Would she be accepted? Or would she be criticized as some perversion of what the Princess should be? Used to be? She probably couldn't even move the sun anymore, even if she wanted to try...
The captain shakes her head, trying to clear her mind of these nagging thoughts. Hiding behind a building like this wasn't going to answer anything. Only thing she could do was simply go out there and face it. What happens happens, and while she doesn't like not having any control over how everypony looks at her, she could once she gets out there and starts, well, making friends.
Must be how Twilight felt. Funny how things come around.
